Priests and pedophilia: the monster of Milwaukee
Returning to more serious topics. U.S. dioceses have done much in recent years to combat the phenomenon of sexual abuse committed by members of the clergy. But the wounds remain open and not always the internal policies of the curiae produce the desired results. The thorn in the side for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, however, this time a member of the same offices of the curia, the vice-chancellor James Connell. Dissatisfied with what has been done by the diocese of Wisconsin (and in that of La Crosse, last seat of the bishop of Milwaukee, Jerome Listecki ), in fact, in recent days, the priest spoke surprise during a press conference convened association which brings together victims, Snap, Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests , asking the bishop to make public all the documents on abuse cases: "Justice requires that the truth is made known," said Connell from the steps of the Cathedral of Milwaukee.
The website of the Diocese then you read the explanations about the events that led to the press conference notes in which it is claimed that the curia has already announced the names of all priests who are the subject of allegations substantiated cases of sexual abuse. The association of the victims, meanwhile, expressed surprise at the words of Connell, stating that no member of the Catholic leadership so far had made a gesture as strong. The vice chancellor also sent an open letter to all priests of the diocese in which calls for transparency and truth ( full text here). Gestures that many sound like a "monstrosity."

Faletti - The full text of the interview on ebook
His first novel I sold four million copies in Italy. But he, with his ironic, but do well planted on the ground, like a good Asti, not "if it pulls too much." It deals with the same eye but also seconded to the challenge of seeing sold its pages in electronic form. Giorgio Faletti, on the other hand, admits to having a bad relationship with digital technology, though he admits that he is very helpful in writing.
What is your relationship with technology?
Poor. The use is strictly necessary and the PC to me is just a complex typewriter. On the other hand when I started doing stuff on electronic devices took me an afternoon to do the job that a 15 year old boy would do in a quarter of an hour, only to lose two hours to repair the damage that I've done myself.
What do you think the market growth of the ebook?
I am convinced that the future of publishing may be the one. But it is a future that will see my heirs, for the moment I still think the book and the technological perfect and as such unsurpassed. The ebook certainly has its advantages in certain situations but is more convenient to the book, which, for example, needs no charger. I think, in short, the book that smells of paper, if it has resisted so far to say that technology is still cutting edge. It is true that even with the arrival ebook on the beach and I can read a book without the problem of wind around my pages, but it is also true that I bring around something that has its weight, which must be recharged, that if you fall on the ground is broken, that if it gets wet jumps. The book's paper, however, falls to the ground if you pull it up and continue to read it.
But as a writer does not think the ebook to attract more readers to your books?
I write because I enjoy writing and I hope that as many people as possible read my books, the fact that they do so on a paper book or an ebook I am okay, from my point of view, the reward is the same. But I think the current state of things, the printed book is still a clear advantage. And my reasoning is not a nostalgic old saying "in my day," even though I just turned 60, I think just being realistic.
But you are still strong appeal of the paper ...
With a book and you also have a relationship a little 'physical, a book can be an art object, something dear to keep forever. I for example here in my library I have a whole shelf dedicated to all foreign editions of my books, could not be such a thing, emotional emotionally, if I had only released ebook. It's a bit 'as when it was called, which led to a revolution in size and has certainly improved the quality, but the appeal of vinyl, with those covers that at times were real works of art, is lost. The record, for my age, was a kind of saint. Even today I, for example, I do not have a pirated disc, because I'd rather have something that is mine and which corresponds to certain royalties. One of my readers told me that when my book comes out it is a autographed copy, buy another to read it first and put it on. These are wonderful things for an author and do not know whether it will be an autograph in the future ebook.
with digital signature ...
Yes, perhaps even with the digital signature. Apart from anything else, though, the ebook seems to me an instrument a bit 'mechanical, as something very cool. For example, there are electronic devices that "humanize" the coldness of digital music and play the sound that had the hot vinyl. I can imagine that in future there will be ebook that reproduce the physical pages of paper. In any case I did not pose much problem. For me the computer is a sophisticated typewriter.
But your books also come in electronic form on a computer?
Yeah sure, I write to your computer, but to correct what I wrote print on paper and I read aloud. Clearly not screaming, otherwise the neighbors might think, "Faletti is crazy," but listening to the voice is more facileaccorgersi of what does not work. However I I feel I certainly benefited from the use of computers, because the word I can take, move, pin and above all always have a clean page. I do not know as I would with a typewriter, although there are those who still uses.
How do you imagine you know your readers in the digital age?
My player I guess with a smile, beyond what he has in hand, if a ebook or paper book. I imagine, in short, so maybe that got from reading the overflowing milk on the fire or burns the roast, or forget to get off the subway. Although, of course, a little 'I'm sorry for milk or the roast.

The enclosure? From sublime hope
Yesterday, Sunday, Nov. 21, was the Day "Pro Orantibus" established in 1953 to support the monks and nuns who live beyond the grating. Among the numerous celebrations and events (Christ the King Sunday, a prayer for persecuted Christians, the end of the Liturgical Year, Second Sunday of Advent in Milan), unfortunately this is a back seat. Too bad, because they are theologically the cloistered existence of real schools . In that silence is the secret that teaches us to live. Provided that there are still some who want to "learn to live." Paradox? Not really. The events, even political ones, these days we are taught that words do not meditate fanfare, but leave the vacuum once the sound is over. Let's "listen" to the silence that resonates among the cloisters, we need it. Now that would be a "last resort".

outside our borders
Today we are in the mood for some small signs of hope. The bad weather, the political wrangling, the economic crisis, the ideological skirmishes there make you want to hermitage. But just a moment, broaden our vision to understand how much hope is there in the world. Today, this year there has been facilitated by the agency Fides reports that two "good news", one from Ghana and one from Peru. The first news
is more precisely Abor, in south-east of Ghana, where the St. Theresa Center, the school of professional training ' Opera Don Guanella . With 40 new disabled children entered this year rose to 110 the number of those for whom a new future in the world of work is possible.
The second event is from Huancayo where Caritas has launched a project for the cultivation of staple foods such as tomatoes, cucumbers, cayhua, broccoli, beets, lettuce, radishes, and even grapes and strawberries, to over 4000 meters above sea level. An initiative that is part of projects for food security, one of the key dimensions to human.
As you can see there is still much to do in the world: those that actually teach us at home we must never lose sight of the fundamental values \u200b\u200bbecause their freedom of expression is never a given.

Caritas Day 2010
Sunday, November 7, the day dedicated to Caritas, typically in a climate of autumn, but still peaceful and friendly atmosphere that now characterizes it, Alzheimer's Cafe has completed the initiative to which the volunteers have been working months: the sale of: scarves, stoles, shawls and ponchos, fully packed by hand with fine wool and silk, on Exclusive models.
All aims to raise the funds necessary for the management of a project which sees an ever increasing involvement of users and, consequently, a constant rise in costs.
The sale, held at the Counselling Centre of the Parish of St. Stephen (Sesto San Giovanni), produced largely positive results, not only were sold almost all of them available, but has even come to the booking of new package the satisfaction of the entire staff of volunteers.
Alzheimer Café, along with the Memorial Gym, will continue its work according to the Calendar of Meetings and takes this opportunity to thank his volunteers and all those who support it with your contribution.

Faith Mass of Bagnasco: no faith in Milan 2?
Saturday, November 6 Emilio Fede made its appearance in the mass of Bagnasco illustrious in the church of God, Father of two Milan, where there is also the headquarters of Mediaset. The occasion was the closure of ' Assembly of the Italian Conference of Major Superiors bringing together the leaders of congregations of men of Italian Provinces (Franciscans, Jesuits, the Oratory, Marist, Redemptorists, Dominicans, etc. ...). In the idyllic perfection Milano 2 religious - many barefoot and in the habit - have brought a small sign of the "state of exceptionalism" (as defined Sequeri) of consecrated life. The main witness of poverty, chastity and obedience (to God), with their presence, have agitated for a moment the quiet life of the neighborhood. And then during the final Mass came Emilio Fede, director of TG4 (whose wording is in the Palace of the Swans, adjacent to the NH hotel where the meeting was held religious). Eventually he got too well Mario Giordano, director of NewsMediaset today, but already journalist for the Catholic weekly "Our time "in Turin. After watching part of the celebration Faith greeted Bagnasco who only wished him" good job "without another word. If someone asked" no faith in Milan 2 "The answer is: everyone knows of their own, while we know that there is Faith.

Free wi-fi: a question of subsidiarity
waiting to see what happens in parliament following the presentation of bill to repeal Article 7 of the Law of the Pisanu 2005 which requires registration with the filing of an identity document to access the Internet via public hotspot, left Milan a campaign to free wi-fi in Italy (A term that supports my previous definition: the wi-fi is criminal and therefore is to keep a prisoner). Good initiative which I think need to join but one wonders why this campaign is not playing by a public body. Maybe someone applies distorted the concept of subsidiarity , or simply a concept is too advanced for Italy in 2010 (think that those "backward" by the Catholic popes have long been used in their teaching).

Spain: criticissima or catholic?
The Pope will be in Santiago de Compostela next Saturday and Sunday will preside over the rite of dedication of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Spain, the land at all sluggish, lives in a way opposed the arrival of Benedict XVI. Among the items that have been raised as a comment on appointment (among other things, the debate on the use of Castilian, Catalan and Galician in the liturgies reported by El Mundo) also that of the group of theologians, "John XXIII" . These scholars who declare themselves liberals, say that the traveling Pope promotes the spread of a conservative vision of Catholicism that the Church away from the poor and, generally, by the people. Perhaps it is true that the expenditure of millions of euro is puzzling, but perhaps these gentlemen Theologians have never tried to be among the crowds who gather for the Pope: among the people there are certainly those who come for folklore and capturing the event only the formal aspect, but for a lot of that time remains imprinted in the memory as an important occasion can sometimes find reasons to have faded. The triumphant swell the ranks of the fundamentalists? I do not think, I can hardly imagine Pope Benedict XVI as far away from triumphalism.

The wi-fi is not there? Mama makes up for Tim. Or deluded?
Minister Maroni says he is ready to amend Article 7 of Law Pisanu : soon propose a solution that would liberalize the use of public wireless Internet reconciling the needs of security. Obviously there is every reason to be skeptical, but we give the minister a little 'time to wonder (the law expires at year end). On the other side but for the magnificent fireworks and progressive development of the cellular network. The latest listings of Telecom us just say "to hell with the wi-fi network in Italy, the fast pass to force the phone! What was never more wrong: the announcement of these blessed 21 Mb / second (in fact they were 28 to tell the truth) was already given last year, someone saw them? Now even talking about 100 megabits per second. Seee, more than 2012. But then even if the network thanks to the billions invested (and why not bring the ADSL to municipalities that do not have it with those funds?) are two question marks: the maximum speed is always the antenna, if there are multiple users have to share the connection speed (if you play dice? and when they are thousands?). First. And second, how much travel on today's mobile internet through the cellular network? Too much, too, even with flat rates. Costs are still designed for a limited use of mobile connectivity. Other than the competition wi-fi (which still does not exist in practice ...).
Update October 30: Beppe Severgnini also spoke on the topic , with his usual pungent but absolutely "Smart." To read.

to the ends: even sexual abuse
The news is reported by Catholic News Service : the three dioceses of Alaska on November 28 will be engaged in a day of prayer for the victims of sexual abuse. The event was preceded by a "Walk of Tears" which was held in a hidden extreme withdrawal of these lands, to name (pictured village linked to the events narrated by the story of the dog Balto), in Diocese of Fairbanks (which in the homepage of the official website gives the possibility to report abuse), where many of the victims are counted among Alaska Natives. The news hits in two aspects: the phenomenon of pedophilia and sexual abuse come true "to the ends", a term who may have been born to other types of messages, on the other hand however, the question of healing the wounds left by this scourge is so much to heart the bishops to become part of normal pastoral agenda. The attention of the bishops of that state for the subject is well attested by the fact that all three pastors of Alaska have met in a small village of 3,500 inhabitants to participate in a march commissioned by a parish priest.

The lesser evil: the Catholic vote in U.S.
In the United States are approaching the elections of "mid-term" . an event where even the nearly 70 million U.S. Catholic want to do their part. On the other hand, the close connection between faith and commitment in society was well remembered when Social Week of Italian Catholics which was held in Reggio Calabria. At the heart of the debate also on this occasion there is the issue abortion. And to provide an interesting reflection on the subject is a article published by the American Jesuit journal America signed by Cathleen Kaveny, a teacher at the Notre Dame in Indiana. Beyond the technical issues that fielding (vote for one candidate pro-abortion is material cooperation in evil? What reasons can justify voting for a candidate who supports abortion? And, morally, what is the difference between a pro-abortion vote and pay taxes that are used for war or buying from a store that sells fruit of exploitation of slavery?), It seems to me that a good starting point for our small Italian company is the suggestion that today, in moral judgments, can no longer think of the individual acts (including voting) as isolated as the responsibility is much more entrenched due to globalization and the close interconnection in which we are immersed. In short, we live constantly on the net and that on the one hand provides us with enormous potential, the other prominent position of responsibility there. Even Italian voters should perhaps begin to grasp how in a network that must learn to manage.

In Italy the wi-fi is criminal
All against Article 7 of Pisanu law that requires identification and registration of those who access the Internet via a public hotspot. But many remember the goodness that it defends the principle: the security line. But how many private access points open, without any kind of password or key of some sort, are turning not only in big cities but also in small provincial towns in our Country? Who realizes that its Wi-Fi router is giving free and anonymous access to the Internet to a terrorist organization bent on an attack, even parked under our house? On the other hand, the security protocols of our home networks, even if password protected, are not as infallible ...
